How good was it to have college football back in our lives? We know the big dogs wasn't playing this week but it was good to finally just have some competitive american football.
OTH Game of The Week
Nebraska @ Illinois
First up was Nebraska travelling to Illinois for the opening game of the weekend. As mentioned in the preview article, Scott Frost came into this season with a lot of pressure building and potentially his last chance to keep his job. This hasn't been helped with him and Nebraska currently under investigation by the NCAA with significant video footage of improperly using analysts and consultants during games.
Illinois hadn't been particularly successful over the past few seasons under the guidance of Lovie Smith neither. Under new head coach Bret Bielema there was always the fresh optimism that a fan carries and with the most super seniors retained in College Football they had enough experience to certainly cause a bit of an upset on opening day.
Standout Performers Blake Hayes - Punters matter too, he had a 59 yard long punt. More importantly he kicked a punt inside the 2 yard line and then followed this by a punt that caused Nebraska to commit a safety. Mike Epstein - 16 Carries for 75 yards and 1 touchdown. Artur Sitkowski - 12 from 15 for 124 yards and 2 touchdowns
Hawaii @ UCLA
Chip Kelly hasn't won a non conference game or an opening game to a season since he joined the Bruins. Given all that, you can't blame me and others for thinking this game could be a potential banana skin. I did see some glimpses towards the end of last season that this team was starting to adopt Chip Kelly style of offence, I just wasn't sure how much we would see in this game with a big game coming up next week. I believed they would win this match-up but did fancy Hawaii to cover the +17.5 spread. How wrong could I have been? The offensive line for UCLA looked dominate from start to finish and Hawaii just wasn't on the same page on offence. Both Charbonnet and Brown had no problem running all over Hawaii and really put this game to bed by the half. It was a very impressive opening performance by UCLA.
They now have a tasty battle with LSU next week, which many our predicting to be a close match, for some this was more of an optimistic view than reality but after this display there just might be some hope for Bruins fans, that they can topple the mighty LSU and be taken seriously this season.
