NFL Mock Draft 2.0 - Top 10 with Mason Riney

This was my first experience of doing a mock draft and I can already see why so many people released multiple versions before the draft takes place.

Within twelve hours of our first mock draft being released, two massive trades took place which completely changed the outlook of the draft.

Mason and I, re-grouped and now go again with our top ten 2.0 Mock Draft

With the 1st overall pick the Jacksonville Jaguars...

James

Select - Trevor Lawrence, QB / Clemson

Nothing changes here as mentioned before, Trevor Lawrence is the best quarterback on the board going to a team that certainly needs to find their franchise quarterback

Mason

Select - Trevor Lawrence, QB / Clemson

No spice, head coach Urban Meyer said he was in the direction they (Jaguars) were heading in, making this selection that much clearer.

With the 2nd overall pick the New York Jets...

James

Select - Zach Wilson, QB / BYU

The Jets pick has just become even more valuable now, but I still believe they go quarterback and take Zach Wilson to finally take this team forward and try to make them relevant again.

Mason

Select - Zach Wilson, QB / BYU

The Jets coaching staff has been given a face lift, and I believe the quarterback approach in New York isn't much far off from the mindset in San Francisco. One more year for Sammy D, and then time for a change at the position come next season.

With the 3rd overall pick the San Francisco 49ers...

James

Select - Justin Fields, QB / Ohio State

The 49ers show their hand early and make the big trade with the Dolphins for the 3rd overall pick. I predicted them trading with the Falcons on the original mock draft for the fourth overall pick to go and get their guy, Justin Fields. It all depends on who the Jets take at two I guess, but I think they are expecting Fields to be here at three.

Mason

Select - Trey Lance, QB / North Dakota St.

The 49ers seem to be content with another year of Jimmy-G behind center, giving the one-year starter in Trey Lance ample time to learn the offense and develop entirely into the quarterback of Kyle Shanahan's hopes and dreams.

With the 4th overall pick the Atlanta Falcons...

James

TRADE - to New England Patriots - Trey Lance, QB / North Dakota State

Shock move by New England, Cam Newton isn’t getting it done, it’s a move that you wouldn’t expect from Bill Belichick but then that was also being said in free agency. Why spend the cash if you haven’t got a quarterback to make the most of the players.

Mason

Select - Patrick Surtain II, CB / Alabama

The most complete, big bruising corner goes to Atlanta in hopes of assisting that secondary for years to come. The Falcons have struggled against the pass as of recent times, and the teams willing to trade up would have the Falcons going too far back in the draft for General Manager Terry Fontenot’s taste.

With the 5th overall pick the Cincinnati Bengals...

James

Select - Penei Sewell, OT / Oregon

The Bengals watch all the trades happen in front of them whilst rubbing their hands, with four quarterbacks taken above them they get arguably the best player in the draft at a position of serious need. After Burrows injury last year, they need to protect him and by far the best lineman in the draft is a great way to do that.

Mason

Select - Kyle Pitts, TE / Florida

With an aggressive selection, the crafty tight end heads to Cincinnati. Yes, they could grab a lineman here; however, I believe Pitts’s ability to line up against a team’s most efficient collegiate corner and produce at the level he did is too great of a weapon to pass up for Joe ‘Exotic” Burrow.

With the 6th overall pick the Miami Dolphins...

James

Select - Ja’Marr Chase, WR / LSU

I see people mocking Pitts to the Dolphins and he is incredible, but I think they’re happy enough with Gesicki and get Chase to finally strengthen their injury prone wide receiver core.

Mason

Select - Ja’Marr Chase, WR / LSU

It’s time for Tua to show he was worth the draft capital; what better way than to assist your young QB1 than drafting the top wide-out in this year’s class. Big body, stellar instincts, and his awareness set him above the others.

With the 7th overall pick the Detroit Lions...

James

Select - DeVonta Smith, WR / Alabama

I think they lean towards wide receiver here. Similar to the Dolphins they are content with their tight ends and are in serious need of a top receiver. Heisman Trophy winner Smith is the route they take and Jared Goff at least now has a receiver core to work with.

Mason

TRADE - to Washington Football Team - Justin Fields, QB / Ohio St.

Washington makes a splash and sends #19, #82, next year’s first and fifth to select their quarterback of Fields’ future. He won’t be rushed to start and can learn from the “Trials of Fitzmagic.”

With the 8th overall pick the Carolina Panthers...

James

Select - Mac Jones, QB / Alabama

Jones has gone from an underrated prospect to one of the most hyped guys as the draft heads closer. The Panthers sit patiently and find a guy they spent a lot of time with at the senior bowl. Not a flashy pick but could end up the most solid pick in the early stages of these young quarterbacks careers.

Mason

Select - Mac Jones, QB / Alabama

If Mac Jones is a smoke and mirrors, then head coach Matt Rhule is a magician; the Senior Bowl standout and seventeen game starter draft stock has seen a sudden jump in recent weeks. Fantastic footwork, accurate in the short and long game, and nice size for a quarterback.

With the 9th overall pick the Denver Broncos...

James

Select - Patrick Surtain II, CB / Alabama

Injuries have really limited the Broncos secondary over the past couple of seasons and with Bouye being cut, Surtain II just makes sense at this spot.

Mason

Select - Micah Parsons, LB / Penn St.

The Broncos are looking to better their defense, and with the top corner off of the board, the best linebacker is a fantastic constellation prize. An incredibly athletic player can also play edge and benefit tremendously from being in the same linebacker room as Von Miller.

With the 10th overall pick the Dallas Cowboys...

James

Select - Caleb Farley, CB / Virginia Tech

As mentioned in the previous mock draft, I think the Cowboys feel pretty good about Farley and had him ranked equal with Surtain so nothing changes here, they get some much needed talent on that putrid defence.

Mason

Select - Rashawn Slater, OT / Northwestern

Everyone has Dallas going corner, and rightfully so, however Slater at this spot in the draft is too good even for Jerry Jones to pass up. You just paid your quarterback, now protect him, and Slater gives you the feeling that he has all of the upsides to be a franchise tackle at the next level.
